What are Travel Warnings?

Travel Warnings appear in country travel reports issued by the Canadian government where the security of Canadians may be compromised. They provide the Government of Canada’s official advice regarding travel to a country or specific region(s) of a country. A Travel Warning may recommend that Canadians avoid “all travel” or “non-essential travel” to a country or region and, in some cases, that they leave that country or region. The website for your reference is www.voyage.gc.ca

Can clients cancel their trip as a result of a new travel warning?

RBC Insurance® travel insurance products provide coverage for a wide variety of situations, including cancellation or interruption of a trip as a result of a travel warning. As long as a written formal travel warning is issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of the Canadian government advising Canadians not to travel to a country, region or city which is part of their insured trip, travellers wanting to cancel their trip as a result of the travel warning are eligible for cancellation coverage under the appropriate RBC Insurance travel insurance policy. Please note that the travel warning has to be issued by the Canadian government after the traveller purchased travel insurance and has to be in effect on their departure date for the coverage to apply.

Client is travelling to a destination that has a travel warning in place. How will this impact their emergency medical coverage?

The decision to travel is the sole responsibility of the individual. If the client leaves Canada after the Canadian Government issues a travel warning advising Canadians not to travel to that destination, they will not be covered while the travel warning is in place during the insured trip. However, if an RBC Insurance client is at destination and a new travel warning is issued, and something unexpected happens to them, they will be covered for emergency medical treatment subject to the terms and conditions of the policy.
